How to Buy Wine: Top Questions to Ask

Buying wine can often be a tough task. There are so many out there and there’s so many with names that you don’t recognize or can’t even pronounce. So how do you know which one you should buy? Before you go into the store ask yourself these four questions.

  1. What’s the occasion?

This is an important question to ask yourself. Are you looking for a wine to go with your meal? Or, are you looking for something to drink with the girls on wine night? The answer to that will impact the type of wine you will buy. The wine professionals at Universal Fine Wine & Spirits are great at helping you choose the best wine for your occasion.

  1. How much do you want to spend?

First, it’s important to know that there is no direct correlation between the price of the bottle and the quality of the wine. Once you know how much you want to spend, you’ll want to stick to your budget.

  1. What do I like?

This question can be hard to answer. It’s often hard to put what you like into words. However, you’ll want to try. Answering this question comes with experience drinking wines. If you’re new to it, experiment, and find out what you like.

When you are describing what you like, it’s important that you are as general as possible. Use words like “red fruit” or “fruity” to describe what you like rather than being descriptive saying I like “strawberry” or “cherry” flavor. People’s taste buds are different, and one person’s strawberry taste may not be yours.

You could also take pictures of labels of the wines that you like. This will help wine professionals guide you to choosing a wine similar to that.

  1. What will I be eating with it?

Wine doesn’t always have to go with food, however, it’s at its best when its served with a meal. That’s why you’ll want to know what it is that you’re going to be eating with the wine. If you let an expert at Universal Fine Wine & Spirits know what it is that you will be eating with the wine, they will be able to direct you to choose a wine that will enhance your meal.

Once you know the answers to all these, let a wine professional know, and ask them, can you give me some guidance?

If you are somebody who likes to experiment and try new wines, here are a couple of other questions that you could be asking wine experts.

  1. What’s like…?

You’re not going to learn much and experience different wines if you drink the same wine every time. Instead, ask for something that’s like what you love but from a different producer. This will help you explore a vast amount of different wines.

  1. What do you like to drink?

This is always a great question to ask a worker at Universal Fine Wine & Spirits. Because we are tasting and trying different wines all the time, the wines that we like to take home must be pretty special and delicious.

  1. Do you have any new wines?

If you’re someone who likes to try new things and learn about different wines, this is a great question to ask. The new wines are often the freshest in our staff’s head, which means we can tell you a lot about that wine.

There is no bad question to ask. At Universal Fine Wine & Spirits, we want to make sure you are going home with the right wine, so ask away. We will be more than happy to help answer any of your questions. Come in and talk to an employee, give us a call at 727-937-8330, or visit our website.
