Most Popular Spirits in the United States
It’s no surprise that Americans are big fans of their spirits. In 2020, the United States alcoholic beverage industry experienced solid sales, reaching $31.2 billion, according to trade body the Distilled Spirits Council. The 7.7 percent increase is in part due to creative measures by state leaders and business owners to keep the hospitality industry afloat during COVID-19 shutdowns. While “sheltered in place,” consumers also chose to buy premium spirits as “affordable luxuries” to help pass the time in quarantine.
As life slowly returns to some form of normalcy, the industry continues to experience growth post-shutdown. However, some spirits are sipped more than others. Here are the top ten most popular spirits in the USA according to The Spirits Business:
Kahlúa. Fans of the coffee-flavored liqueur describe it as distinctive, tasty, original, and classic. Perhaps due to the rising popularity of coffee-flavored cocktails, Kahlúa beat out yearly favorites including Absolut Vodka and Johnnie Walker to inch into the top ten.
Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. A must-have in American liquor cabinets, Captain Morgan comes in at number nine. This spiced rum is a secret blend of Caribbean rums with subtle notes of vanilla and caramel giving classic rum cocktails a distinctive, flavorful finish. The brand is currently delving into flavored spirits, including coconut and watermelon.
Jim Beam Bourbon. With its oaky vanilla and spicy aroma, Jim Beam comes in at number eight on the list. Since 1795, Jim Beam has been perfecting Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey while staying true to its 216-year old tradition.
Grey Goose Vodka. Distilled using only ingredients - single-origin French Picardie winter wheat and natural spring water - Grey Goose is the first vodka on the list at number seven. Its smooth and distinctive floral notes make a bold choice for any vodka cocktail.
Seagram’s Gin. As America’s number one gin, it’s the only gin in the top ten. Seagram’s Gin is a wonderful balance of botanicals including juniper berries and coriander. Easily mixable and adaptable, Seagrams can go from a sophisticated martini to a classic gin & tonic.
Crown Royal. Smooth as the Canadian water used to create it, Crown Royal Blended Canadian Whisky comes in at number five. Rich and robust with hints of oak and vanilla, Crown Royal is delicious on the rocks or with a mixer. Also look for the brand’s Regal Apple and Vanilla varieties.
Bailey’s The Original Irish Cream Liqueur. While it sits at number four on the list, Bailey’s is the most popular liqueur worldwide. Its perfect combination of premium Irish dairy cream, aged Irish whiskey, and chocolate makes it ideal for sipping on the rocks or adding to your coffee for an extra kick. Bailey’s comes in several other flavors including caramel and strawberries and cream, as well as dairy-free Baileys Almande.
Smirnoff Vodka. It may only be number three in the US, but Smirnoff is the world’s number one selling vodka. This award-winning vodka has a robust flavor and smooth finish, making it the perfect complement to any mixer. Smirnoff now comes in a variety of flavors from caramel and whipped cream to raspberry and watermelon.
Bacardi. Distilled in Cuba, Bacardi is the world’s most awarded and most popular rum - but the number two spirit in the US. Classic and refreshing, Bacardi is a light-tasting and aromatic rum with floral notes of orange blossom, lavender, and rose.
Jack Daniel’s. One of the most well-known whiskey producers is also the most popular. Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey comes in at the coveted top spot on the list. Founded in 1866, Jack Daniel’s is the country’s older registered distillery. Mellowed with sugar maple charcoal and matured in handcrafted barrels, it’s balance of sweet and oaky flavor makes it number one in our hearts.
