April Fool’s Cocktails
A martini with tequila? A Manhattan with rum? Pop Rocks with
vodka? Before you start scratching your head and questioning everything you
knew about cocktails, remember April Fool’s Day is just around the corner.
Confuse your friends and your tastebuds with these cocktails that aren't truly
what they seem.
Apple Fool’s Martini
Just like how fool’s gold is not actual gold, the Apple
Fool’s Martini lacks any apple (or vodka). However, its light green color,
crisp flavors and fruitiness can potentially fool a drinker into believing
they’re enjoying an authentic apple martini.
Ingredients
·
¾ ounce simple syrup
·
5 fresh basil leaves
·
1-½ ounces Don Julio Blanco tequila
·
½ ounces Green Chartreuse
·
1 ounce ruby red grapefruit juice, freshly squeezed
·
¾ ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
·
Garnish (optional): thin apple slice, maraschino cherry
Directions
1.
In a shaker, muddle the simple syrup and basil.
2.
Add the Blanco tequila, Green Chartreuse, ruby red
grapefruit juice, lime juice, and ice into the shaker; shake until
well-chilled.
3.
Double-strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe.
4.
Garnish with a thin apple slice or a maraschino cherry.
Pop Rocks Cosmo
Pull a sweet yet surprising prank
with this April Fool's Day cocktail. Instead of rimming the glass with sugar,
use explosive Pop Rocks candy.
Ingredients
·
2 packets watermelon- or strawberry-flavored Pop Rocks candy
·
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
·
3 ounces cold vodka
·
¼ cup unsweetened pomegranate juice
·
1 ounce Cointreau
·
Garnish: lime wedge
Directions
1. Put candy between sheets of
parchment; lightly crush with a rolling pin or mallet.
2. Moisten the rims of two chilled
coupes with lime wedge, then dip them into the candy.
3. Add vodka, lime juice, pomegranate
juice, and Cointreau in shaker with ice; shake well.
4. Divide between glasses.
Not Manhattan
A “Manhattan” cocktail without
whiskey or vermouth? You won’t believe it until you try it.
Ingredients
·
1-½ ounces Banks 5-Island rum
·
2 ounces apple juice
·
3 dashes Peychaud's bitters
·
4 dashes Angostura bitters
·
Garnish: maraschino cherry
Directions
1. Add all the ingredients to a mixing
glass; fill with ice.
2. Stir, and strain into a chilled
Martini glass.
3. Garnish with a cherry.
Toilet Water
While this concoction resembles your
toilet bowl after you’ve dropped a blue cleaning tablet in it, this berry vodka
mixed drink is one of the tastiest Powerade cocktails out there. Plus, you can
hydrate while you drink by combining alcohol and Powerade – we're not fooling!
Ingredients
·
25 ounces vodka
·
4 ounces triple sec
·
12 ounces Mixed Berry Powerade
·
2 liters lemon lime soda
Directions
1. Add ice, vodka, triple sec, Powerade
and lemon lime soda to large container.
2. Stir and serve.
H2O Highball Cocktail
While this showstopper of a drink is enjoyable year round, it’s
best sipped on April Fool’s Day. Why? Despite its lengthier preparation and
balance of flavors, this highball contains no alcohol.
Ingredients
·
6 ounces small-batch spring water (2:1 hydrogen-to-oxygen)
·
Sparkling water, chilled, to top
·
1 teaspoon distilled water
·
Garnish: watermelon slice
Directions
1. Fill a highball glass with cubed ice;
set aside.
2. Add the small-batch spring water
into a shaker with cubed ice; shake until well-chilled.
3. Dump the ice from the highball glass;
replace with 3 large ice cubes.
4. Using a handheld strainer, double
strain the small-batch spring water into the highball glass; top with the
sparkling water.
5. Float the distilled water over the
top and gently stir.
6. Garnish with a watermelon slice.
