Celebrate Bourbon Heritage Month

During September, bourbon enthusiasts across the country will raise a glass to honor "National Bourbon Heritage Month," a month-long celebration celebrating America's native spirit.

While America's rich distilling history predates the country's founding, bourbon was recognized by Congress as a distinct product of the United States in 1964. Federal law requires that bourbon be made in America, contain at least 51% corn, and be aged for no less than two years in oak barrels. In 2007, the Senate declared September "National Bourbon Heritage Month," recognizing the history of the spirit.

Bourbon lovers have gathered to celebrate the history, craftsmanship, and achievements of the bourbon industry ever since. Of course, indulging in a cocktail is the best way to honor National Bourbon Heritage Month. Here are some bourbon-inspired ideas; try one, try them all!

Bourbon Old Fashioned

There are many versions of the Old Fashioned, but you can't go wrong with this true classic cocktail that's perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients
1 teaspoon sugar
3 dashes Angostura bitters
1 teaspoon water
2 ounces bourbon (or rye whiskey, if preferred)
Garnish: orange twist

Directions
Add the sugar and bitters to a rocks glass, then add the water; stir until the sugar is dissolved.
Fill the glass with large ice cubes and add the bourbon; gently stir to combine.
Garnish with an orange twist.

Beggar's Banquet

Bourbon gets a delightful touch of fall with the addition of rich maple syrup. The chilled lager makes this drink perfect for beer lovers and those new to the cocktail train.

Ingredients
2 ounces bourbon
¾ ounce maple syrup
½ ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
5 ounces lager, chilled
Garnish: orange half-wheel

Directions
Add the bourbon, maple syrup and lemon juice into a highball glass filled with ice.
Top with lager; stir gently and briefly to combine.
Garnish with an orange half-wheel.

Man o' War

Named for one of the greatest racehorses of all time, the Man o' War begins with a bourbon base, giving a shout-out to Kentucky and the Mint Julep, the most famous horse racing-related drinks. When combined with orange liqueur (either orange curaçao or triple sec), sweet vermouth, and lemon juice, it brings a welcome burst of energizing citrus.

Ingredients
2 ounces bourbon
1 ounce orange curaçao or triple sec
½ ounce sweet vermouth
½ ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
Garnish: lemon peel, brandied cherry

Directions
Add bourbon, orange curaçao or triple sec, sweet vermouth, and lemon juice into a shaker with ice; shake until well-chilled.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with a skewered lemon peel and brandied cherry.

Bourbon Rickey

The Bourbon Rickey, a tart yet refreshing highball, is usually made with gin (which we also recommend trying). When combined with lime and club soda, this cocktail is a lifesaver on balmy late-summer evenings.

Ingredients
1-½ ounces bourbon
½ lime, freshly squeezed
Club soda or sparkling water to top

Directions
Fill a highball glass with ice.
Squeeze the lime half into the glass and drop it in; add the bourbon and fill with club soda or sparkling water.
Stir briefly to combine.

Bourbon Lift

A staple of New York delicatessens, this egg cream drink is reimagined in a rich, frothy, fizzy concoction spiked with bourbon. The dose of refreshing bubbles will make you feel like a kid again.

Ingredients
1-½ ounces bourbon
½ ounce coffee liqueur
½ ounce heavy cream
½ ounce orgeat or amaretto
Club soda, chilled, to top

Directions
Add the bourbon, coffee liqueur, heavy cream, and orgeat or amaretto into a shaker and vigorously shake without ice for 10 seconds. Add ice and shake again until well-chilled.
Strain into a Collins glass; fill with the club soda, pouring from about 6 inches above the glass.
Wait a few seconds, and then add another splash of soda, allowing the foam to lift above the top of the glass.
Serve with a straw.
