Warming Winter Cocktails
Looking to stay warm on
those chilly winter evenings with a new cocktail or two? Winter (and the new
year) is an opportunity to try some winter warmers to help get through the
colder temps and those post-holiday blues.
Fire up your bar cart and start mixing
these cocktails:
Forbidden Sour
The Forbidden Sour is a great
gateway cocktail for those who are beginning to appreciate whiskey. The
convergence of pomegranate and bourbon (who knew?) yields a simple, refreshing,
and perfect cocktail.
Ingredients
·
1 ounce bourbon
·
1 ounce Pama pomegranate liqueur
·
1 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
·
½ ounce simple syrup
·
Garnish: orange wheel, cherry
Directions
1.
Add the bourbon, pomegranate liqueur, lemon juice, and
simple syrup into a shaker with ice; shake until well-chilled.
2.
Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
3.
Garnish with an orange wheel and a cherry.
Kombucha Sangria
If one of your resolutions is to
drink less in 2023, give this low-ABV cocktail a sip. The delicious mix of tart
and tangy cherry kombucha helps to keep the beverage full of flavor without
overloading the alcohol.
Ingredients
·
1-½ ounces red wine
·
¾ ounce Aperol
·
2 ounces cherry (or other) kombucha
·
½ ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
·
½ ounce simple syrup
·
Garnish: lemon slice
Steps
1.
Add all ingredients and ice into a Collins glass; stir to
combine.
2.
Garnish with a lemon slice.
Whisky Sin
This simplified and traditional take
on a Hot Toddy is perfect for cold January nights. This recipe is easy, so you
can whip it up whenever you feel a chill coming on - it’s guaranteed to warm
you from the inside out.
Ingredients
·
Boiling water
·
1 teaspoon demerara or light brown sugar
·
Lemon peel
·
2 ounces Scotch whisky
Directions
1.
Rinse a mug or heatproof cup with boiling water to warm it.
2.
Add the sugar and a swath of thin-cut lemon peel, then add 1
ounce of boiling water and stir to dissolve the sugar.
3.
Add the scotch.
4. Finish by adding 1 more ounce of
boiling water to reheat the beverage.
Spiced Rum
Milk Punch
This recipe follows closely to the
original version of the drink, dating back to the 1600s, but with a New
Orleans-inspired twist. The spiced rum combined with the other flavors makes
this cocktail an ideal winter-spiced nightcap.
Ingredients
·
1-½ ounces spiced rum
·
3 ounces milk
·
¾ ounce simple syrup
·
1 dash pure vanilla extract
·
Garnish: freshly grated cinnamon, freshly grated nutmeg
Directions
1.
Add the spiced rum, milk, simple syrup, and vanilla extract
into a shaker with ice; shake vigorously until well-chilled.
2.
Strain into a chilled rocks glass.
3.
Garnish with a light dusting of freshly grated cinnamon and
nutmeg.
Boozy Hot
Chocolate
Nothing says winter like a mug of
hot chocolate. Put an adult spin on this childhood staple by adding the spirit
of your choice (we suggest rum or even green Chartreuse) to create this
delicious dessert drink.
Ingredients
·
2 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
·
6 ounces milk, heated
·
1-½ ounces spirit of choice
· Garnish: mini marshmallows,
peppermint stick (optional)
Directions
1.
Put the chopped chocolate in a coffee mug.
2.
Pour the hot milk into the mug, and let stand for 2 minutes
until the chocolate melts; stir with a spoon until smooth.
3.
Pour in the spirit of your choice and stir to combine.
4.
Garnish with mini marshmallows.
